Surviving Joins New Letts Media Venture

Letts Group launching new publication focused on business, climate and life

Surviving is joining a new Letts Group media venture called Letts Journal, which launches on 11 August 2021. Surviving will become a section of the Letts Journal, and will focus on the future of business, climate and life, supported by the Surviving thinktank. The new publication will expand digitally and organically, growing through its readers.

Surviving’s newsletter has been a key test-bed for the development of the broader news publication, having developed a strong and loyal readership in just a year. Research shows that readers enjoy Surviving’s exclusive articles focused on future thinking - attempting to look around corners and predict trends, so you can better navigate business and life.

You told us that you appreciate our independent, weekly, ad-free platform, that is delivered direct to your inbox. You like that we keep articles tight, yet insightful - who has time for more? You’ve got used to receiving our weekly update, by email, every Wednesday. Indeed, many of you have told us that you look out for it.

During the pandemic, you took the time to feed back to us that Surviving’s future trends articles have, in some way, helped you navigate this difficult year. That means a lot to us.

We believe that disruption, uncertainty and change will become the norm, fuelled by climate, technology and society. As we step out into a false sense of freedom, tainted by Covid’s third wave, we are reminded that ‘normal’ will be anything but that.

The established media is hampered maintaining a shrinking base. They can be slow to change - fearful of their demise. Cost reduction and editorial shrink has led to enhanced click-chasing tactics, price inflation and the inevitable giving over to factionalism. There is widespread over reliance on republishing corporate and institutional press releases.

A new kind of media can emerge that is independent, open web and ad-free. One that accepts that day-to-day news reporting has become commoditised - people are looking for trusted shapers and commentators.

Readers want media and information to come to them so they don’t have to chase around the Internet to find it. Many want media brands that represent an opinion but are not slaves to bias. They want news to be factually accurate, but also opinionated, challenging and fun.

We’ve tried to encapsulate some of these trends into a brand new platform that can develop from small beginnings into something more important - without losing its soul. Initially written by a core Letts team, then widening. Still edited by Philip Letts.

This year is the 225th anniversary of Letts and the birth of personal media. We hope that the Letts Journal will prove to be another important step in the pursuit of a more democratic approach to news gathering. Letts has often played the long game, as a family and a business. We plan to do the same with the Letts Journal. Developing it slowly and deliberately, growing through our readers.

The Letts Journal will officially launch on 11 August 2021 as a free, weekly publication talking straight about business, climate and life. It will have a number of sections - including ‘Surviving’. Existing subscribers to Surviving will receive it free and direct to their inbox.

You will hear from us a bit less as we work on its launch and a successful first issue. if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you.
